What is Janam Kundali?
A Janam Kundali (also called a birth chart, natal chart, or janam patrika) is a snapshot of the exact sky at the moment you were born. It records the positions of all nine Vedic planets — Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangala (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), plus the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu — across the twelve signs (rashis) and the twenty-seven lunar mansions (nakshatras). The chart is divided into twelve bhavas (houses), and the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth moment becomes your Lagna (ascendant) — the first house of your chart and the lens through which every other placement is interpreted.
For a Kundali to be useful for prediction, the planetary degrees must be accurate to the minute of arc. A few minutes of error in birth time can move the Lagna by one whole sign, change which planets aspect which houses, and shift a Nakshatra pada. That is why RashiByte uses a high-precision astronomical engine rather than pre-computed tables: every planet's longitude is calculated from Swiss Ephemeris data for the exact UTC instant you enter, then converted to the traditional Vedic frame using the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa.
How RashiByte calculates your Kundali
RashiByte's engine follows the classical rules of the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), the foundational text of Parashari Jyotish attributed to Sage Parashara. The calculation pipeline is:
- Birth-time normalisation — the date, time, and place you enter are converted to a precise UTC instant using the geographic coordinates and timezone offset of your city.
- Planetary longitudes — each graha's position is computed with Swiss Ephemeris precision (sub-arc-second accuracy) using the Lahiri ayanamsa to convert from the tropical to sidereal frame.
- Lagna and bhava cusps — the ascendant is derived from your latitude and the Sidereal Time at the birth instant. RashiByte uses Whole Sign houses, the classical Parashari convention where each house equals one sign.
- Dignity and aspects — every planet is classified by its dignity (exaltation, debilitation, own sign, friend's sign, enemy's sign) and full Parashari drishti is applied — Mars aspects the 4th, 7th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th, 7th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd, 7th and 10th, and all planets aspect the 7th from themselves.
- Yoga and Dosha detection — the engine recognises the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas (Ruchaka, Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya, Sasa), Gajakesari, Budhaditya, Chandra-Mangal, Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga, Viparita Raja Yoga, Dhana Yoga, and the major doshas (Mangal Dosha with cancellation rules, Kaal Sarp, Pitru Dosha).
- Vimshottari Dasha — the 120-year planetary period system is computed from your birth Nakshatra, giving you the Mahadasha, Antardasha, and Pratyantardasha sequence with exact start and end dates.
- Divisional charts — all 16 Shodashavargas (D1 to D60) including Navamsa (D9), Dasamsa (D10) and Shodashamsa (D16) are generated from each planet's longitude, with Vargottama detection when a planet occupies the same sign in both D1 and D9.
- Shad Bala — six-fold planetary strength is computed per BPHS Chapter 27, and Bhav Bala for houses per Chapters 28–29, so you can see which planets are dominant in your chart and which are weak.
The interpretation text that appears for each placement comes directly from the BPHS corpus, so what you read on RashiByte is not generated generic filler — it is the text Sage Parashara assigned to that planetary arrangement.

Vedic (sidereal) vs Western (tropical) astrology — which one do you see?
RashiByte follows the sidereal (Vedic) zodiac, the same convention used in classical Indian Jyotish. The sidereal zodiac is anchored to the actual fixed stars of the constellations, while the tropical zodiac used by Western astrology is anchored to the seasons (the vernal equinox always marks 0° Aries in the tropical frame). The two systems diverge by about 24° today — roughly one whole sign — because of the precession of the equinoxes over roughly 1,800 years. The angular offset between the two frames is called the ayanamsa, and RashiByte's engine uses the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, which is the standard reference used by virtually all Indian Panchang and most Vedic astrologers. If your Western Sun sign is in late Cancer, you may well find your Vedic Sun sign is late Gemini on RashiByte — both readings are "correct" within their own frame, but the planetary degrees reported here always come from the sidereal frame. The page offers a Tropical switch on the form above if you want the Western layout for comparison.
How to read your free Kundali — enter your date of birth, exact birth time (down to the minute), and birth city. If you do not know your time of birth to within an hour or two, the Lagna and house cusps will not be reliable; in that case, ask a family member or check your birth certificate before generating the chart, or use the Numerology and Rashifal tools which do not depend on the ascendant.
After clicking Show Kundali, scroll through the chart, planetary positions, divisional charts (especially the Navamsa, D9), Vimshottari Dasha timeline, and the BPHS predictions — then use the AI assistant if you want a plain-English interpretation of any placement.

What exactly is Janam Kundali (जन्म कुंडली)?
Janam Kundali is the map of planetary positions at the exact moment you were born. It shows twelve houses representing different life areas — career (10th), marriage (7th), wealth (2nd and 11th), health (6th), parents (9th and 4th) and more. Each planet, its sign, its Nakshatra and its dignity in those houses decide which life themes are highlighted for you according to Vedic astrology.
What is Vimshottari Dasha and how do I read it?
Vimshottari Dasha is a 120-year planetary period system used in Vedic astrology to time life events. Each Mahadasha is ruled by one of the nine planets for a fixed number of years, and is divided into Antardashas and Pratyantardashas for finer timing. Your starting Mahadasha is determined by the Nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth — so the Moon's Nakshatra is the very first thing a Jyotishi reads from your chart.
Is the RashiByte Kundali really free?
Yes. Kundali generation, Navamsa and all 16 divisional charts, Yoga and Dosha analysis, Vimshottari Dasha timeline, Shad Bala, Ashtakoot Guna Milan and the daily Panchang are all available without an account. PDF download, AI assistant chat, and saving more than 10 charts are the only features that require a free sign-up, and even those include starter tokens at no cost.
How accurate is the planetary calculation?
Planetary longitudes are computed using Swiss Ephemeris, which is the same data NASA uses for planetary positions. The Mahadasha, Nakshatra and Navamsa boundaries reported by RashiByte are accurate to the underlying ephemeris precision, which is sub-arc-second for all the classical planets. The only accuracy limit in a north-Indian-style Kundali is your birth-time precision: a 4-minute error in time can shift the Lagna by 1°.
What is Mangal Dosha and how do I check it?
Mangal Dosha (also called Manglik Dosha or Kuja Dosha) is present when Mars is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the birth chart. Generate your free Kundali on RashiByte and the Dosha section will automatically flag it — including any cancellation ( cancellation causes include Mars in its own sign Aries or Scorpio, exalted in Capricorn, aspected by Jupiter, or both partners being Manglik).
What is the Navamsa (D9) chart?
Navamsa is the most important divisional chart in Vedic astrology. It is derived by dividing each sign into nine equal parts (3°20′ each), and reveals the underlying strength of every planet, marriage prospects, spouse characteristics and spiritual progress. A planet strengthened in D1 but weak in D9 is considered fragile in real life; a planet strong in both is called Vargottama and is exceptionally powerful — RashiByte flags these with a special badge on the chart.
Can I get career predictions from my Kundali?
Yes. The 10th house from the Lagna represents career, and the 6th from the Arudha Lagna represents the actual workplace. The Dasamsa (D10) chart is the dedicated divisional chart for professional life. RashiByte generates D10 automatically alongside your main chart, and the Jyotish AI assistant can summarise career themes from your 10th house lord, its placement and any yogas affecting it.
